Pressure Treated Pine
Pressure treated pine is the most popular and affordable decking option. Built from chemically treated pine, this material is engineered to decrease the rate of wood decay and insect damage. After the wood dries out, painting or staining every 2-3 years gives the surface an extra layer of protection against the elements. Unfortunately, because pressure treated lumber is so inexpensive, it is prone to warping and splitting during its drying process.
Western Red Cedar
A step up from treated pine, Western Red Cedar decking is less prone to warping, cracking and splitting in the elements and is naturally more resistant to rot and insect damage. Painting or staining helps to prolong the life and performance of a cedar deck.
Artificial Decking, PVC & Capped Composite
Low-maintenance PVC and Capped Composite decking are warrantied against cracking, splitting and cupping. Unlike wood, PVC and Capped composite decks are splinter free and installed using hidden fastening systems to create a barefoot-friendly surface. With a woodgrain texture and a large variety of colors to choose from, these materials open the door for complete customization that is impossible with wood decks.
Despite the significantly higher initial cost, these products will save time, money, and headaches in the long run, because they are rot-resistant and don't require regular staining and sealing to maintain their appearance and durability. With a 30 year warranty for PVC and 25 year warranties for composites, these products are engineered to last.
Artificial decking can accumulate dirt and grime like any other surface and should be lightly powerwashed at least twice a year to remove these substances from the surface and maintain an optimum appearance. This greatly minimizes any possibility of staining, fading or discoloration from the dirt, debris and range of weather we see here in Indiana.
